Supreme Court Civil Litigation Index Computer
Screen A is the main search menu screen for the Supreme Court Civil Litigation Index computer. This computer system is in use in Kings, Queens, Richmond, and Putnam Counties. New York County has a different system. Please refer to the New York County chapter for information on their system. Bronx County still uses manual systems for their court records. The Civil Litigation Index computer keeps track of all the cases filed in that countyıs Supreme Court. It also serves as a minute book to control what papers are filed in each case. To conduct a search, enter a name in the name field. The field will take an individual name or a corporation/business name. At this point you can press "PF12" to run the search or you can press "ENTER" to go to "party type". The choices to the right will be available for party type. Use the "PRINT ALL" option instead of limiting your search. The main menu already has "ALL" selected. You can select a different party type or press enter to go to the date field.
The date field allows you to limit the computer search to a certain time period. Leave the fields blank and the computer will search all of its memory. Since the computer only has information from early 1990, the computer does not have much information to search. Press enter to go to the next field.
The court field selection will be different for each county. Use the "ALL" option to search the entire database of names in the computer. Press "ENTER" to get to the "CASE TYPE" field. This option lets you select a certain type of case such as regular, matrimonial, and tax. Each county will have different options to choose from. Once the search criteria has been entered, press the "PF12" key to conduct a search. Screen B will appear.
AT SCREEN B, The computer will list all names starting with the one you entered. This screen lists the file number and year of the case, the party type (Plaintiff or Defendant), name of party, and the case type. In order to see more information about a specific case, press the arrow keys until the case you want more information about is highlighted. Then press enter. Screen C will appear. From Screen B, you can print ("F9"), get help ("F1") or go to previous page ("ESC").
By pressing the "F5" key, you will see the action window, also known as the clerk's minutes. The "F2" key will display the full name, the "F3" key will list the attorneys, and the F9 key will print the information on the screen.
The computer can also be accessed by file number or by attorney. In order to change the search function, press the "ESC" key until you reach the main menu. The menu to the rightwill appear for your selections. Press the "s, t" arrow keys to select the type of search you want and press "ENTER". Screen D above is an example of a "FILE NUMBER SEARCH". Enter the year in a four digit format. Press return to get to the "FILE #" field. Enter the file number using preceding zeros when necessary (i.e. 002693, instead of 2693). Press "PF12" to run the search. The computer will list the requested files the same way it did for the name search at Screen B. The computer functions work the same way as for the name search .
